Fitness trackers are becoming more personal and powerful in 2022 and beyond.

Published

on

The future of fitness tracking is to help you understand the health data, precisely when companies look to develop newer health indicators.

Your first fitness tracker, regardless of whether it was an early Fitbit or the now-defunct Jawbone, and a primary heart monitor or pedometer strap — likely only tracked those steps and calories consumed. The first smartwatches, for instance, basically felt like smartphones rather than standalone devices.

However, fast forward to 2022, and everything has changed. Wearables aren’t just niche devices designed for early adopters or fitness enthusiasts. They are now a necessity for everyone. Pew Research Center reported in 2020 that one-in-five US adult wears a fitness or smartwatch band. The global market for smartwatches grew by 47% per year in the first quarter of 2021 as per Strategy Analytics, signaling the fastest growth rate for the industry since the year 2018.

The latest wrist-worn devices are complete fitness devices that can take an ECG reading directly from your wrist, analyze sleep quality, measure blood oxygen levels, etc. This opens up a plethora of possibilities but complicates things. We have access more than ever before to information about the heart’s rate, the amount of sleeping and physical activity we’re consuming, and our general health. However, some more advanced health metrics may be difficult to comprehend, which raises whether they’re beneficial.

So, contextualization and personalization will be crucial for the wearables of the future as well as current models as per conversations with experts in the field and tech executives and analysts. The medical community is enthusiastic about the possibility that wearables in the future will be able to assist in monitoring more sophisticated metrics, for example, fluctuations in glucose levels and the role that wearables play in the field of preventive health.

Better understanding our health information from our fitness trackers

The most significant improvements likely to come shortly will be making health data more valuable and personalized. Oura, Whoop, and Fitbit are already helping steer the market towards this direction by implementing their scoring methods, some of which require a monthly subscription.

Each of Oura and Fitbit, For instance, both provide readiness scores to allow wearers to determine if it’s time to go for a vigorous workout or just a day off. These scores are based on indicators like the variability of resting heart rates, sleep, and other body signals. Whoop is a comparable recovery score that gives insight on whether a person’s body is physically ready for vigorous exercise.

Oura’s readiness score reflects the overall philosophy of the company’s health monitoring approach: health tracking devices should be able to provide context in addition to numbers and data, according to Chris Becherer, Oura’s chief product officer. He said that Oura would keep this same method with the addition of new features, like the tool for predicting periods that it released in October. The company will only be expanding to new kinds of health tracking if it can provide similar insight.

“We won’t do it just for doing it,” Becherer stated. “We’ll make sure that it fits with the holistic, user-friendly experience that Oura is known for.”

Fitbit believes there is a second opportunity to provide more individualization and specificity to health indicators: examining the connection between physical and mental health. Fitbit has already begun to dip its toes in the waters of mental health through its EDA application, which is available on Fitbit Sense and measures the changes in sweat levels to determine how your body may be reacting to stress.

Fitbit can also let wearers record their moods to go along with the measurements so that users can know how they felt the day the test was conducted. The analysis of this type of data over time may aid Fitbit in understanding better what bodily changes can mean for an individual’s general health, which will allow for more detailed insights.

“We can over time get more and more correlation between this idea of, ‘How do I feel?’ compared to ‘What is my physiology and what are the metrics telling me?'” said Jonah Becker, Fitbit’s design director. “Which I think is a powerful thing.”

The ability to track other body signals, like electrodermal activities (i.e., the EDA app’s sweat readings), could create the foundation to further Fitbit features. Eric Friedman, Fitbit’s co-founder and vice president of research, uses Fitbit’s sleep stage function as an illustration. The part that tells the wearer the amount of time spent on light sleep, or REM sleep, is possible only because of other indicators that came before it, such as cardiovascular rate motion measurement.

“Imagine taking that and EDA, and you … start building things together to start layering these health metrics on top of each other, going to the next thing,” Friedman stated.

Monitoring blood sugar levels could be the next step in health tracking.

What exactly this “next thing” remains undetermined. However, reports and experts’ predictions suggest monitoring blood sugar levels in wearable devices as a possible area of research.

But that does not mean that diabetics will be able to use the readings of their smartwatches to calculate insulin doses. This will require more invasive devices that tear the skin shortly, according to Dr. Steven LeBoeuf, president and co-founder of Valencell company, which produces sensors to monitor health for wearable devices.

In the future, a glucose-monitoring smartwatch could provide more comprehensive assessments of how the person is performing in the middle of normal, low, and high blood sugar. According to Dr. LeBoeuf, this could allow wearers to understand the extent to which changes in diet or exercise affect their blood sugar levels or if the wearer should utilize a glucose meter.

“Now that has positive implications,” said Dr. LeBoeuf. “So I think you will be seeing that technology in wearables as well, whether it comes from Valencell or some other entity.”

Professor. Zahi Fayad, director of Mount Sinai’s Biomedical Engineering and Imaging Institute, believes there is potential in this field. The ability to monitor glucose levels like those described above could assist wearables in providing more personalized nutritional advice. This is important since current guidelines are usually based on broad studies of population and, therefore, lack personalization, according to Dr. Fayad.

“Everybody’s gut microbiome is different and reacts to food differently, or reacts to lifestyle changes differently,” Dr. Fayad said.

However, it’s unknown what time or date this function will be available in regular smartwatches or fitness trackers. Apple has been trying to add blood sugar monitoring to its Apple Watch; according to reports from Bloomberg and The Wall Street Journal, both reports suggest that the technology is still in its infancy.

Roberta Cozza, a senior director of the analyst at Gartner, believes there’s still much to be done. While research is underway in this field, she thinks that medical clearances’ accuracy poses challenges.

“I think for this, you’re going to have to have something that is medical-approved,” she added. “So it will take some time until we find something usable and reliable.”

Fitness trackers and smartwatches are already beginning to blur the lines between health and wellness gadgets. In addition to more sophisticated measurements, such as glucose readings, tech companies must know how consumers can interpret the data.

Cozza. “Maybe vendors need to find new ways to be clearer with consumers around the expectations that they might have when wearing some of these devices,” Cozza said. “Because this will be getting just more and more complicated.”

Filling in the gaps between visits to the doctor

The tech and medical communities appear to have a similar objective in advancement in the field of wearables: Making it easier for people to maintain their health between appointments with a doctor.

“Instead of having one data point per year, you have continuous data points across every part of your day,” Oura’s Becherer explained.

This is the reason behind the new capabilities and features added to current wearable devices. For instance, Amazon’s Halo health app comes with the ability to estimate fat percentage in your body by analyzing images by a smartphone’s camera that it explores using computer vision and machine learning. This feature has been a bit controversial about privacy concerns for individuals.

However, Melissa Cha, vice president of Amazon’s Halo division, says this service intends to assist users in keeping track of their body’s changes as another way to track their health progress between visits to the doctor.

“You have a long-term record that you can then share with your care provider or physician if you want to discuss changes in your body composition over time,” Cha explained.

Doctor. Devin Mann, associate professor of medicine and health for the population in New York University Langone Health, believes that we’re seeing more convergence between consumer and medical devices. It’s because each has something to learn from the other.

Commercial wearables are getting more excellent capabilities for health monitoring, and medical device manufacturers are seeking to reach larger publics.

“We’re seeing those two streams coming together,” Mann explained. “And there’s more overlap between them.”

In the future, Certain experts are enthusiastic about the possibility of using wearable devices that can help identify diseases early. This kind of technology is still in the beginning stage. However, Dr. Paul Friedman, a cardiologist within the Mayo Clinic’s AI in Cardiology Work Group, is encouraged by the field’s advances thus far. When it was first introduced, many doctors would not have believed in the information from health trackers to aid in developing the treatment of patients, according to Dr. Friedman. However, this is changing.

“The answer would have been no; nine out of 10 said no when they were surveyed,” Friedman explained. “Now it’s almost reversed.”

Explain the Use of Child Selectors in CSS

Published

on

Do you have any experience in web development? You may have heard about CSS (Cascading Style Sheets). It plays a different role in developing the website. The use of CSS only makes the web page looks attractive and pleasing. Apart from making the web page attractive, the website looks like the website only when you use CSS. It increases the demand and popularity of CSS in the modern environment.

In CSS, selectors and combinators hold a unique position. CSS renders you a vast array of options to change and maximize your HTML pages. With the CSS selectors, those options are permitted to target the HTML individual elements to ensure the design is fine-tuned whenever required.

Vast varieties of CSS selectors are accessible – simple selectors, combinators selectors, Pseudo-class selectors, and Pseudo-elements selectors. It allows for fine-grained precision while choosing the elements to style. The CSS selector is the central part of the CSS rule, and thus it needs enough attention.

The combinators indicate the relationship between the selectors. The CSS selector can comprise more than one simple selector and include the combinator between the simple selectors. The combinators are available in four types – descendant selector (space), general sibling selector (~), child selector (>), and adjacent sibling selector (+).

In the following section, you will understand in-depth about the child selector because it is widely accessed in CSS.

What is a child selector?

The child selector in CSS is accessed to choose all the child elements with the specific parent element. In other words, the child selector matches all the elements, which are the immediate children of the particular elements. The combinator in the child sector is > (greater than sign). White characters often surround the combinator.

You have to access two selectors to develop the CSS child selector. The child combinator chooses the elements, which match the first selector’s direct children and the second selector. You can choose only top-level list items with the child combinator. Here is the syntax of the child selector.

element > element {

// CSS property

}

Example

div > p {

background – color: orange:

}

Use of the child selector in CSS

The working process and use of the child selector are straightforward. The selector has two selectors and is separated with the greater than symbol. The first selector indicates the parent element, whereas the second selector defines it as the child element with the style properties. Here is an example.

Div > p

{

font – size : 12px;

}

In the sample code, the <div> element is the parent followed by the <p> child element. The above statement rule makes any paragraph with a font size of 12. The child selector is called the precise operator. It renders certain surprising possibilities when added with the universal selectors.

Example to implement child selector in CSS

div > p

It selects all <p> elements in which the parent is <div> element.

<html>

<head>

<title>

CSS Descendant Selector

</title>

<style>

div h2 {

font-size:26px;

}

</style>

</head>

<body style = “text-align:center;”>

<div>

<h2 style = “color:green;” >

CSS

</h2>

<div>

<h2>css</h2>

</div>

</div>

</body>

</html>

Output
